More Garage Organization Tips

Guys, it’s almost springtime. With the countdown until warmer weather in full swing, now is the perfect time to get all of that “Dad stuff” in order that is strewn about in the garage.

Whether you’ve got a mountain of stuff to sort through, or just need to pick up a bit, getting it out of the way now will help you enjoy spring from the very moment it arrives at your doorstep. Getting motivated to hunker down and get it done is no easy feat, but with our garage organization tips, you’ll be able to cut through the clutter and make it out to the back nine in no time flat.

Divide and Conquer

The first step to mastering your domain is to figure out your plan of attack. Depending on how cluttered your space has become, this can be easier said than done. But, Rome wasn’t built in a day! You don’t have to do it all at once, just decide on your method and your schedule and follow through.

Spreading out the workload via area works as well. Start in the far corner and work your way to the front, or however works best for you. Then, once you’ve made enough of a dent, decide where you’ll pick up tomorrow. After enough time, you’ll realize you’re already finished!

Let it Go

Let’s face it, we don’t need half of the stuff we put away. We think, “Oh yes, I’ll need this encyclopedia set one day,” then relegate it to a box in a corner, and never think about it again.

Don’t be afraid to declutter your life! Sort through your old boxes and find stuff that you really want or need, and get rid of the rest. Don’t be afraid to donate! Yes, the old adage that “another man’s trash is another man’s treasure” remains true.

Designate areas for where you will place stuff to keep, to donate, and to throw away. Not only will you be making space in your life, but you’ll be filling up the life of someone else. From old clothing, to furniture and knick-knacks, you can donate almost anything. It’s a win-win!

Clean Up Your Act

If possible, remove most of (or all of) your belongings from the garage and give it a thorough cleaning. Start from the top, using a dry rag or duster to knock loose debris to the ground. Wipe down shelving, walls, counter tops, be as thorough as possible.

Next, sweep the floor (or use a shop-vac if you wish) and once you’re down with that, mop thoroughly. A garage floor can be one of the dirtiest surfaces in your home, but the cleaner you keep it the better off your space will be!

Special note, if you use and store harmful chemicals, make sure to put them away properly! Keep them in a place out-of-reach for pets and children, and make sure they are labeled clearly.
