10 Ways to Make the Most of Your Closet Space

It’s easy to get carried away with hastily shoving things into our closets.  It’s not so easy to dig through that mess later, hoping to find a specific shirt or pair of shoes.  We understand.  In fact, we have a few tips that can help you make the most of your closet space!

1. Group your garments
Rather than throwing everything into the closet without rhyme or reason, cluster like items together.  For instance, jeans, dress pants, and skirts go on this side.  Dresses hang here.  Shirts and blouses go there.  Jackets and coats are hung over there.

2. Use thin hangers
By using thinner hangers, you’ll be amazed at the amount of closet space saved.

3. Fold what you can
Because clothing on hangers takes up so much valuable closet real estate, fold as many items as you can.  Folding is ideal for items like sweaters anyway because it keeps them from stretching.

4. Do the hanger test
If you’re unsure about what to eliminate from your wardrobe, use this test.  Anytime you wear something and go to hang it back up in the closet, put the hanger backward.  Do this over the course of a month or so.  By the end of that time, you’ll be able to see which clothes you actually wear and which ones you don’t.

5. Stay in season
Keep only the current season’s clothing on display in your closet.  Out-of-season items can be stored in plastic containers overhead or elsewhere in the house.

6. Showcase your shoes
When shoes are left tossed about on the floor of your closet, they may tend to disappear.  You have other options.  These include over-the-door shoe racks, hanging shoe shelves, and clear, stackable shoe boxes.

7. Don’t underestimate the doors
As we mentioned, over-the-door shoe racks are a great way to store your footwear.  However, closet doors can also be used to hold coats and jewelry organizers.

8. Try a little DIY
Place shower curtain rings on a hanger to create a handy scarf or tie holder.  Screw some cup hooks into the bottom of a wooden hanger for a simple belt organizer.

9. Put it in a bin
Use stackable storage bins to hold purses and other accessories.

10. Step up
Keep a collapsible step ladder in your closet for convenience.  Now, you’ll be able to easily access those items on the top shelf.
