7 Steps For Cleaning Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are some of the most gorgeous window treatments you can dress your window with. Their versatility and distinctive styling give them a life that creates a vibrant setting for any home.

Keeping your shutters in tip-top condition helps them continue to add that vibrancy for years after the purchase, making them a purchase sure to stand the test of time. Cleaning plantation shutters isn’t hard, but by following these simple steps, you can be sure you’re providing quality care for your investments.

Cleaning Plantation Shutters – A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Fill a container with about a ½ gallon of water. This ensures that the detergent you use will be diluted enough to not pose a significant threat to the material or finish of your shutters. Fill another container with the same amount of water, but do not add anything to it. If you must, mark which container is which so it’s easy to remember.

Step 2. Add a small amount of soap or detergent to the container. If you’re trying to remove a more serious stain, you can use a cleaner but make sure it is water-based. Using any cleaner containing organic solvents could affect the surface appearance and durability of your shutters.

Step 3. Use a soft washcloth. This goes without saying, but any material that is used as an abrasive should clearly be avoided as they will damage the frame or louvers of your shutters. Dip your washcloth into the water and squeeze it until it is damp. Do not oversaturate your shutters with water.

Step 4. Clean both sides of the shutters, watching for small, hard to reach areas that would be easy to overlook. Being thorough is key. Provide extra attention as needed to remove more stubborn stains. Be gentle, but firm.

Step 5. Using water from your other container, dip a dry washcloth into it, and wipe down all of the shutters once more to remove any left behind residue from your cleaning agent. This will help prevent compromising the integrity of your shutters.

Step 6. Finish by drying the shutters off with another dry cloth. This step is not to be overlooked, especially if you’ve installed real-wood shutters. Water damage can warp the louvers or frame causing light leakage and other problems. Avoid this by being thorough in this step.

Step 7. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

That’s all there is to it! Cleaning plantation shutters is a breeze, don’t you agree?
