Being the owner of Dannenmueller Blinds, Shutters, and Closets, I’ve seen a lot of homeowners going through the arduous, yet rewarding, process of a home remodel. In all my travels, I’ve seen those who have planned ahead and benefited from it, and others who haven’t. Home remodeling is a delicate balance of blood, sweat, tears, management of resources, and planning. It’s for this reason that I wanted to share with you these 7 unexpected things to plan for during a home remodel.
Outliers
At the end of all your hard work, there’s going to be at least one or two items on your list that take much longer to solve than anything else. It could be anything, from your kitchen tiling, small electrical work that needs to be redone, or windows that don’t seal properly. Whatever it is, just know that these small problems are going to arise, and you will solve them in time.
Delays
The larger scope your project is, the more complicated it becomes. The more complicated it becomes, there’s a greater chance for something to go wrong. It could be a weather delay; it could be that someone gets sick. Don’t be afraid to make changes to your schedule and be nimble with your timing.
Budget Concerns
No matter how on-track you might be with your budget, seeing the numbers stack up can become quite the panic-inducing moment. Don’t let it! As change orders come and go, don’t fret. It’s always a good idea to have at least 10 to 20 percent above contract as cash-on-hand for unexpected expenses.
Dust
No matter how well you cover everything, or how much you move out, there will be dust EVERYWHERE. Dust in places you didn’t even know existed! Clean up is a big duty to embark on; make sure your crew is aware of its necessity.
Noise
It’s going to be loud, from saw blades and sanders to nail guns and hammers—the work will leave little room for the peace and tranquility you’re looking to create. Be prepared for the onslaught to the senses, and perhaps from your neighbors if they’re close!
Decisions
You’re where the buck stops, you’re writing the checks; expect to be delegating responsibilities and making the call on decisions both large and small. It’s not going to be easy, but no one said it would be, right?
The Grand Finale
After the last nail is put in, the last tile laid, the last fixture replaced, the last window replaced… it’s time to celebrate! You’ll want to show off your work, invite the friends, family, even the neighbors, over to celebrate and have a good time with you in your lovely new home!
